Tombs of Amphora in Necropolis of Antandros, Master’s Dissertation


Ancient city Antandros is located between the Boarders of Balıkesir province. Most specifically city is in the territory of Altınoluk neigbourhood in Edremit district. Ancient city was founded on the Kaletaşı Hill. Hill is on the 2.5 km. east side of the Altınoluk. According to the modern researchers ancient city had founded on the western sides and slopes of the hill. There is a Kara Kazan spring on the 300 m. west of Kaletaşı hill. Spring is a natural boarder between ancient city and necropolis area. Necropolis is aproximatelly 500 m. west side of Kaletaşı Hill. Necropolis of the city have been found first in the 1980’s. The mentioned area had opened to the zone for construction in the beginning of 1980’s. The salvage excavation had been done in the necropolis from time to time between 1991 to 1995. Mentioned salvage projects had been held by archaeologist from Balıkesir Kuva-i Milliye Museum. The systematical excavations have been continued on ancient city and its necropolis since 2000 under the direction of Prof. Dr. Gürcan Polat from Ege University, Classical Archaeology Department. The aim of this project is to evaluate commercial amphoras that used as a infant graves from the excavations between 2001-2012. Accordingly commercial amphoras are clasified by production centres and chronological order. Mostly these amphoras used as a infant graves as mentioned before the grave gifts were also evaluated in the content of this thesis.
